Counselling · Sydney & online
When online connection starts to narrow your choices.
Keep what matters. Question what no longer works for you.
Counselling around difficult involvement with online communities, creators and influencers. Explore trust, belonging, boundaries and choices without judging online life itself.
Connection online can be meaningful. You are still allowed to set limits.
The relationship may matter to you.
A creator or community may offer companionship, guidance, shared interests or a place where you feel understood. The concern may arise when it becomes harder to disagree, manage spending, protect your privacy or make room for other relationships.
We can consider creator-led groups, forums, private chats, gaming or fandom communities, paid memberships and online advice circles. Naming the setting does not imply that it is harmful.
When you rely heavily on one person’s view.
You may rely heavily on one person’s interpretation, even where the relationship is largely one-way. Some people call this a parasocial relationship. The useful counselling question is not the label, but whether the connection leaves room for your own judgement and other support.
Feeds and recommendations are another part of the environment. eSafety’s guide to echo chambers and feeds provides an independent explanation. We do not assume that repeated content, admiration or belonging proves manipulation.
What we can work on together.
Consider expectations and boundaries
Look at access, spending, disclosure, loyalty and the consequences of saying no or taking a break.
Reconnect with your own priorities
Make room for what you value outside the community, including sleep, care responsibilities, relationships and chosen interests.
Develop alternatives without isolation
Consider what could replace an important source of support before making changes that remove it.
Where another kind of help is needed.
TEC does not provide device security, platform investigations, financial advice or specialist addiction treatment. Harassment, threats, scams or image-based abuse may need a specific reporting or support service.
Where an unfamiliar digital situation is part of your enquiry, we first clarify whether counselling within our scope is suitable or another service would be more appropriate.
Common questions.
Is a parasocial relationship always unhealthy?
No conclusion follows from that label alone. We consider the actual relationship, its effects and your ability to question or change your involvement.
Do you treat social-media addiction?
We do not advertise a specialist addiction service. We can clarify the concern and whether counselling within TEC’s scope or another service is appropriate.
Can I stay in the community?
That can be part of your goals where workable and safe. Support does not require a decision to leave made in advance.
